Shuttler Chen Long beats Chong Wei to clinch gold

Rio de Janeiro: Second seeded Chen Long of China defeated top seeded Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia to clinch the gold medal in the men’s singles event of the badminton competition at just concluded Rio Olympics here on Aug 19.

The Chinese dominated the court to take the match in straight games 21-18, 21-18 in an hour and 13 minutes at the Pavilion 4 of the Riocentro.

The 33-year-old Malaysian had to settle for the silver for the third consecutive time at the Olympics.

Fourth seeded Viktor Axelsen of Denmark beat reigning champion Lin Dan to grab a bronze medal in the men’s singles event.

The Chinese went down 21-15, 10-21, 17-21 to the Danish opponent in an hour and 10 minutes.

The 32-year-old veteran Dan had lost his semi-final match to Malaysian giant Lee Chong Wei in a neck-and-neck battle 21-15, 11-21, 20-22 at the Pavilion 4 of the Riocentro. (Agencies)
