intaj khan - CopyMelbourne, VIC – Peace, brotherhood and community values. This was the main message evoked by Al-Taqwa College’s Principal Omar Hallak at the Eid al-Fitr celebrations in West Melbourne.

Over 3,000 people gathered around Melton and Wydham City Council area to enjoy a day of prayer, entertainment and of course a large feast – including some fine Australian lamb.

Eid al-Fitr festival marks the end of Ramadan – a month-long period of fasting from sunrise to sunset, and usually culminates in a great celebration where children are given gifts and presents.

Speaking at the festival, Hallak stressed the importance of young people’s role in the community to create and maintain good Muslim “Ummah” – or the collective community of Islamic peoples. The ceremony was also attended by local Councillor Intaj Khan, who along with other prominent community leaders offered a prayer on this holy day.
