Essendon Football Club to celebrate Embracing India Week

Melbourne: For the first time, the Essendon Football Club (EFC) will be officially celebrating ‘Embracing India Week’ with a range of programmes which will give the growing Indian community opportunities to engage with Australian Rules Football and enjoy all the excitement of supporting the Essendon Football Club.
The Embracing India Round from July 26 to August 2 will include Indian dancing, cooking and sports.
Indian Auskick on July 29 will see Dyson Heppell, professional footballer, currently playing for the EFC make an appearance at Bombers Gurdwara Craigieburn Auskick Centre, Victor Foster Reserve. On July 31, there will be banner making at the True Value Solar Centre where 20 lucky GLoBALL Participants will assist the Essendon cheer squad in making the banner that the team will run through on Sunday. The programmes will continue through to August 1 on Saturday with the Bombers team training with opportunity for autograph session.
The club has also dedicated an Indian Content Hub on its website, which provides news and video content in Hindi.
“Essendon FC has however worked with the Indian community on other events prior to this and in 2013 recognising the new emerging Indian community in the north-west regions of Melbourne, EFC made a commitment to create programmes and initiative that would create engagement between the club and the community,” said Salim Mahazi, Multicultural Development Officer, EFC.
Mahazi said the response from the community has been fantastic.
While cricket is still the number one sport, the Australian Rules football is definitely growing its popularity within the community.
